Quotes of the Day for 5 May 2002 – Commitment
Last Wednesday I stopped at church where a potluck was in progress to honor a friend, the Reverend Lars Clausen. Lars served as a pastor to the Inupiat Eskimos on Alaska's Seward Peninsula, and is currently one week into a 103 day effort to raise $5 million for Lutheran services there. (It's not an area in which the collection plates overflow.) During these three months, Lars will set at least one Guiness Book record - he is riding a unicycle from Neah Bay, the upper left-hand corner of the US, to the Statue of Liberty. I told him I thought he was nuts, I wouldn't try to ride ten feet on a unicycle. He said a lot of folks agreed, and asked me how to setup his modem so he can send out updates from the road. Another struggle against overwhelming odds took place at Puebla, Mexico on this day in 1862. A ragtag militia of 4,700 poorly equipped and inadequately trained Mexicans met a crack French force of 7,200 - and won. They lost the war, but they prevailed that day. Neither Lars' trip nor the Mexican defense had much of anything going for it but commitment.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
- Margaret Mead
If you want to take your mission in life to the next level, if you're stuck and you don't know how to rise, don't look outside yourself. Look inside. Don't let your fears keep you mired in the crowd. Abolish your fears and raise your commitment level to the point of no return, and I guarantee you that the Champion Within will burst forth to propel you toward victory.
- Bruce Jenner
The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.
- Vincent Thomas Lombardi
The relationship between commitment and doubt is by no means an antagonistic one. Commitment is healthiest when it's not without doubt but in spite of doubt.
- Rollo May
Don't give up whatever you're trying to do - especially if you're convinced that you're botching it up. Giving up reinforces a sense of incompetence; going on gives you a commitment to success.
- George Weinberg
