Quotes of the Day for 15 February 2002 – Galileo

Galileo Galilei was born at Pisa on this day in 1564. At a time when the now-familiar orbits of the planets around the sun were considered heresy, he not only accepted the work of Copernicus but built the finest and most powerful telescopes to help demonstrate that the sun was not the center of the universe. The Inquisition arranged for him to spend the rest of his life under house arrest, forbidden to publish, for the sin of being correct.

The quotes:

Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.

All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.

You cannot teach a man anything, You can only help him to find it within himself

I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
