Quotes of the Day for 15 December 2001 – Rights

Today is Bill of Rights Day in the US, the anniversary of their ratification in 1791. Today's quotes remind us of the importance of that document, and the need to make sure they aren't eroded in our time.

The quotes:

The strength of the Constitution lies entirely in the determination of each citizen to defend it. Only if every single citizen feels duty bound to do his share in this defense are the constitutional rights secure.
     - Albert Einstein, 1879 - 1955

The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased.
     - Alexander Hamilton, 1755 - 1804

Freedom from fear could be said to sum up the whole philosophy of human rights.
     - Dag Hammarskjold, 1905 - 1961

So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy.
     - Roger Baldwin

I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the rights of the people by the gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.
     - James Madison, 1751 - 1836
