Quotes of the Day for 14 December 2001 – The Future

By now everyone should know that the predictions of Nostradamus regarding the World Trade Center bombings in September were frauds, but the wide and rapid circulation they received underscores the human fascination with peering into the future. The quotes:

The future you shall know when it has come; before then, forget it.
     - Aeschylus

The future is a great land; a man cannot go around it in a day; he cannot measure it with a bound; he cannot bind its harvests into a single sheaf. It is wider than vision, and has no end.
     - Donald G. Mitchell

The future is no more uncertain than the present.
     - Walt Whitman

Life is a series of collisions with the future; it is not the sum of what we have been, but what we yearn to be.
     - Jose Ortega y Gasset

When clouds form in the skies we know that rain will follow but we must not wait for it. Nothing will be achieved by attempting to interfere with the future before the time is ripe. Patience is needed.
     - The I Ching
