Quotes of the Day for 28 November 2001 – Independence
As an American I tend to associate Independence with early July, and use quotes on that theme at that time. But Panama gained independence from Spain on this day in 1821, Albania proclaimed independence from Turkey in 1912, Chad became a French-affiliated republic in 1958, and Mauritania gained its independence from France in 1960 so I'll dust the theme off and use it today.
It is my living sentiment, and by the blessing of God it shall be my dying sentiment, independence now and independence forever.
- Daniel Webster, eulogy for John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, 2 August 1826
There will never be a really free and enlightened state until the state comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its power and authority was derived, and treats him accordingly.
- Henry David Thoreau, 1817 - 1862
If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.
- Henry Ford, 1863 - 1947
