Quotes of the Day for 6 November 2001 – Trumpets

It was a brassy day in history today. Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax was born at Dinant, Belgium on this day in 1814, forty years later John Phillip Souza was born at Washington City. I had no problem finding saxophone jokes, but in quotes I was pretty much limited to trumpets.

The quotes:

The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet.
     - Theodore M. Hesburgh

No trumpets sound when the important decisions of our life are made. Destiny is made known silently.
     - Agnes de Mille

With the pride of an artist, you must blow against the walls of every power that exists, the small trumpet of your defiance.
     - Norman Mailer

If you wish in this world to advance
Your merits you're bound to enhance;
  You must stir it and stump it,
  And blow your own trumpet,
Or, trust me, you haven't a chance.
     - William S. Gilbert, 1836 - 1911
