Quotes of the Day for 15 September 2001 – Revenge

Last Tuesday, many of the people I spoke with were talking about nuclear revenge on Afghanistan, speaking of glowing lakes of glass in the desert. Most have calmed down at least a little since then. These quotes speak to the corrosive nature of Revenge on our spirits - they shouldn't suggest that I am disinterested in justice.

The quotes:

For mere vengeance I would do nothing. This nation is too great to look for mere revenge. But for the security of the future I would do everything.

Certainly, in taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy; but in passing it over, he is superior; for it is a prince's part to pardon.
     - Francis Bacon, Of Revenge

All the while thou studiest revenge, thou art tearing thine own wound open.
     - Thomas Fuller, 1608 - 1661

Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.
     - Martin Luther King, Jr, 1929 - 1968

Revenge is a dish that should be eaten cold.
     - English proverb
