Quotes of the Day for 23 August 2001 – Optimism and Pessimism

Although I think I am optimistic overall, I do find myself vacillating. Maybe that's because I'm on the cusp of Mr Twain's dichotomy - it happens that I am 48. Or as some wag wrote on a college bathroom wall, "An optimist says the glass is half full, a pessimist replies that it is half empty, but an engineer says that it is simply twice as big as needed for optimal efficiency."

The quotes:

The man who is a pessimist before 48 knows too much; if he is an optimist after it, he knows too little.
     - Mark Twain

The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.
     - William Arthur Ward

When I look at the world I'm pessimistic, but when I look at people I am optimistic.
     - Carl Rogers, 1902 -1987

The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true.
     - James Branch Cabell, 1879 - 1958

It doesn't hurt to be optimistic. You can always cry later.
     - Lucimar Santos de Lima
