Quotes of the Day for 28 May 2001 – Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day, the day to remember those who have fallen in battle to create the communities we enjoy today. I don't glorify war and certainly feel there have been other choices that would have been better in many cases, but I honor the commitment and sacrifice of those who have given their lives in this way.

The quotes:

It is well that war is so terrible - we shouldn't grow too fond of it.
     - Robert E. Lee

Arms are instruments of ill omen.... When one is compelled to use them, it is best to do so without relish. There is no glory in victory, and to glorify it despite this is to exult in the killing of men.... When great numbers of people are killed, one should weep over them with sorrow. When victorious in war, one should observe mourning rites.
     - Lao-Tzu

In a war of ideas, it is people who get killed.
     - Stanislaus J. Lec

Cowards die many times before their deaths;
The valiant never taste of death but once.
     - William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.
     - John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1917 - 1963
