Quotes of the Day for 1 March 2001 – Earthquakes
My thanks to all who wrote inquiring about my safety after yesterday's Earthquake. There was no damage here, although phone service was inadequate in the face of millions calling to ask us if we were OK, and all of us calling each other to ask, "Did you feel it?" My daughter was on the plaza at Evergreen State College, some ten miles from the epicenter. Away from any buildings she was delighted to find herself "surfing" on waves neatly paved with brick. A very few were hurt by falling items in Seattle, for most of us it gave us something to talk about — and gave me a theme for today.
But the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
- I Kings 18:44
You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.
- Jeannette Rankin
Youth has the resilience to absorb disaster and weave it into the pattern of its life, no matter how anguishing the thorn that penetrates its flesh.
- Sholem Asch
An earthquake achieves what the law promises but does not in practice maintain - the equality of all men.
- Ignazio Silone
Life is at its best when it's shaken and stirred.
- F. Paul Facult
