Quotes of the Day for 27 February 2001 – Mardi Gras
Today is Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, the last day of revelry and excess before Lent. Once again I'll be observing the day quietly, just once I hope to actually get to the streets of New Orleans for the event. But I do have quotes for those who are off to the wildest party of the year.

The quotes:
Excesses are essentially gestures. It is easy to be extremely cruel, magnanimous, humble or self-sacrificing when we see ourselves as actors in a performance.
- Eric Hoffer
It is useless to hold a person to anything he says while he's in love, drunk, or running for office.
- Shirley MacLaine
No animal ever invented anything as bad as drunkenness - or so good as drink.
- Gilbert Keith Chesterton, 1874 - 1936
Drunkenness is nothing but voluntary madness.
- Lucius Annaeus Seneca, c. 4 BC - AD 65
You have played enough; you have eaten and drunk enough. Now it is time for you to depart.
- Horace, 65 - 8 BC
