Quotes of the Day for 18 January 2001 – Faith and Hope

I've glossed past the stories in the news about an earthquake in El Salvador - I'm busy, I don't know anyone there, so I can avert my eyes and walk past on the other side of the street, right? Well, it seems that there are Quotes of the Day subscribers there, at least one was able to get to her computer to ask for some quotes on Faith and Hope. With 1,000 dead and 40,000 homeless they will need faith, hope, and courage.

The quotes:

Courage is sometimes frail as hope is frail: a fragile shoot between two stones that grows brave toward the sun though warmth and brightness fail, striving and faith the only strength it knows.
     - Frances Rodman

There are situations in which hope and fear run together, in which they mutually destroy one another, and lose themselves in dull indifference.
     - Goethe

Isn't it the moment of most profound doubt that gives birth to new certainties? Perhaps hopelessness is the very soil that nourishes human hope; perhaps one could never find sense in life without first experiencing its absurdity.
     - Vaclav Havel

It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, how hopeless the outlook, how muddled the tangle, how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.
     - Emmet Fox

Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.
     - Emily Dickinson
