Quotes of the Day for 19 December 2000 – Examination

A reader in a Naval ROTC unit proudly wrote that he and his cohort had just sailed through their annual inspection. No doubt there are students and former students among us who can appreciate those.

The quotes:

Examinations are formidable even to the best prepared, for the greatest fool may ask more than the wisest man can answer.
     - Charles Caleb Colton

Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain.
     - Henry David Thoreau

Truth is confirmed by inspection and delay; Falsehood by haste and uncertainty.
     - Publius Cornelius Tacitus

One had to cram all this stuff into one's mind for the examinations, whether one liked it or not. This coercion had such a deterring effect on me that, after I had passed the final examination, I found the consideration of any scientific problems distasteful.
     - Albert Einstein

I welcome this kind of examination because people have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook.
     - Richard Nixon, 1973
