Quotes of the Day for 15 November 2000 – Mountains

On this day in 1806 a young army officer named Zebulon Pike first saw a mountain in what is now Colorado. He wanted to climb it, but the Spanish claimed the territory around the mountain and arrested him for trespassing. He never did get to climb it, but it now carries his name: Pike's Peak. In his honor I've selected some thoughts on mountains.

The quotes:

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.

It is the ultimate wisdom of the mountains that a man is never more a man than when he is striving for what is beyond his grasp.
     - James Ramsey Ullman

One may walk over the highest mountain one step at a time.
     - John Wanamaker

To live for some future goal is shallow. It's the sides of the mountain that sustain life, not the top.
     - Robert M. Pirsig
