Quotes of the Day for 14 November 2000 – Listening

This isn't really a political theme, but it was suggested by seeing all the shouting over the recent US presidential election - cascades of words that don't seem to be listened to at all. Even if you haven't been listening to all the furor, these quotes are a good reminder of the value of listening to our bosses and customers, parents and children, teachers and students, lovers and friends.

The quotes:

The reason why we have two ears and only one mouth is that we may listen the more and talk the less.
     - Zeno of Citium

Listening, not imitation, may be the sincerest form of flattery.
     - Dr Joyce Brothers

Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. When we really listen to people there is an alternating current, and this recharges us so that we never get tired of each other. We are constantly being re-created.
     - Brenda Ueland

Congress is so strange. A man gets up to speak and says nothing. Nobody listens - and then everybody disagrees.
     - Boris Marshalov
