Quotes of the Day for 13 November 2000 – Go Terrapin Crew!

The women's crew team at the University of Maryland just finished their Fall season (they didn't tell me how they did, but it's only their second year) and asked for some inspiring words as they start training for the Spring season. There's always that old sailors' proverb: Pray to heaven but row towards shore. Or, Put your backs into it, ladies! Or, "Go Terrapin Crew!"

The quotes:

He that embarks in the voyage of life will always wish to advance rather by the impulse of the wind than the strokes of the oar; and many founder in their passage, while they lie waiting for the gale.
     - Samuel Johnson

Everyone must row with the oars he has.
     - English proverb

If you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and assured, it may never arrive. Mountains will not be climbed, races won, or lasting happiness achieved.
     - Maurice Chevalier

Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind ... the race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
     - Mary Schmich
