Quotes of the Day for 11 November 2000 – Superfluity

As feared, the flu has knocked me out. You can be thankful for two things: First, you probably don't have it. Second, preparing the Quotes of the Day is the most enjoyable easy thing I do each day, so when I'm wiped out it probably is the only thing I'll do. As promised yesterday, from my search for quotes including "flu," some comments on superfluity.

The quotes:

A kiss is a lovely trick designed by nature to stop speech when words become superfluous.
     - Ingrid Bergman

Lord, keep me from all the superfluity of dress, and from preaching empty stuff to please the ear, instead of changing the heart.
     - Francis Asbury

Superfluous wealth can buy superfluities only.
     - Henry David Thoreau

When a thing is said to be not worth refuting you may be sure that either it is flagrantly stupid - in which case all comment is superfluous - or it is something formidable, the very crux of the problem.
     - Miguel de Unamuno
