Quotes of the Day for 2 November 2000 – Elections

In case anybody missed it, we're about to elect a new president in the US. I've restrained myself from commenting as long as possible, but with only a week to go I'm going to bring out the political quotes. I've got quotes from former presidents (and other heads of government), funny quotes, cynical quotes, even some downright mean ones - although I may not inflict those on you. Today I'll start with some good, wholesome comments on Elections.

The quotes:

More important than winning the election, is governing the nation. That is the test of a political party - the acid, final test.
     - Adlai Ewing Stevenson

The political lesson of Watergate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election.
     - Gerald R. Ford

An election is a bet on the future, not a popularity test of the past.
     - James Barrett "Scotty" Reston

I just owe almost everything to my father [and] it's passionately interesting for me that the things that I learned in a small town, in a very modest home, are just the things that I believe have won the election.
     - Margaret Thatcher
