Quotes of the Day for 28 October 2000 – Hopeless Causes

Today is the feast of Saint Jude, patron of the hopeless cause. It is said that since this saint's name is so close to Judas, and in the Greek they are the same, that only the most desperate would ask Jude to intercede. (I'm contrary, I figure you ought to seek intercession from the saints with the lightest workload.) Here are some quotes on Hopeless Causes.

The quotes:

More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.
     - Woody Allen

God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right, even though I think it is hopeless.
     - Admiral Chester W. Nimitz

Isn't it the moment of most profound doubt that gives birth to new certainties? Perhaps hopelessness is the very soil that nourishes human hope; perhaps one could never find sense in life without first experiencing its absurdity.
     - Václav Havel

It makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble, how hopeless the outlook, how muddled the tangle, how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all.
     - Emmet Fox
