Quotes of the Day for 1 October 2000 – Pennies

It has been several years since I last was willing to bend over to pick up a penny on the sidewalk — the coin has no value to me and some superstitious person may delight in finding the omen of good luck. (It also could be noted that I don't bend at the middle as readily as I did in years past.) I was pleasantly surprised at the entries for this worthless coin in the database.

The quotes:

Nothing is cheap which is superfluous, for what one does not need is dear at a penny.
     - Plutarch

A penny will hide the biggest star in the Universe if you hold it close enough to your eye.
     - Samuel Grafton

For religion all men are equal, as all pennies are equal, because the only value in any of them is that they bear the image of the king.
     - Gilbert Keith Chesterton

All lovely things will have an ending,
All lovely things will fade and die,
And youth, that's now so bravely spending,
Will beg a penny by and by.
     - Conrad Aiken
