Your Quotes for 30 June 2006 - Editors

James Patrick Baen suffered a massive stroke on 12 June and did not regain consciousness, he died on Wednesday, 28 June 2006. Although I never met the man, I did some work for him a few years back and had spent countless hours over the years in intense discussions with him online. By his own talent at recognizing good writing, making it stronger by editing, and packaging it in a compelling way Jim probably did more to create the world of science fiction than any other single person. He saved one publishing house (Ace Books), built another as the hired chief editor (Tor Books), and then built his own company (Baen Books). Many authors thrived and countless good books resulted from his spotting gems that others had turned down. If you knew him, you'll miss him as I do.

A critic's judgment is like that of any intelligent person. If he has experience, he is capable of judging whether a book will sell. That is all.
     - Lavina Goodell, junior editor of Harper's Bazaar, 1866

Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers.
     - T. S. Eliot, 1885 - 1968

If you re-read your work, you can find on re-reading a great deal of repetition can be avoided by re-reading and editing.
     - William Safire

Substitute damn every time you're inclined to write very; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.
     - Mark Twain, 1835 - 1910
