Issues Index | Next => On this day in 1896 Henry Ford drove his "quadricycle" through the streets of Detroit. It was early in the morning, but an hour later than planned, because the vehicle he had spent weeks building was wider than the door of the shop he built it in, it took a little extra time to dismantle the doorframe. Sounds like something I might have done. Today's theme is Planning.
Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably will themselves not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die. In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable. Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning. A riot is a spontaneous outburst. A war is subject to advance planning. Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. I wake up every morning determined both to change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning the day a little difficult.
