Issues Index | Next => Late last month some unknown malefactor broke into one of my servers. Last week he sent out countless e-mails to lure folks to come visit his handiwork and cough up their credit card numbers. For the last week I've spent almost every waking hour dealing with the repercussions of that and rebuilding the server with much tighter security. Most of my quotes on the subject suggest that security is overrated, and they could very well be right, but I sure wish I had had a more secure system running before this latest trauma descended.
It isn't for the moment you are struck that you need courage but for the long uphill climb back to sanity and faith and security. The psychic task which a person can and must set for himself is not to feel secure, but to be able to tolerate insecurity. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature.... Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Clearly, security without values is like a ship without a rudder. But values without security are like a rudder without a ship. The only security men can have for their political liberty, consists in keeping their money in their own pockets. To believe is very dull. To doubt is intensely engrossing. To be on the alert is to live, to be lulled into security is to die. Would you like to see quotes like these in your mail tomorrow morning?
