Coty essentially invented brand-name perfume and was first to develop a host of marketing techniques common in cosmetics and fashion to this day. If that isn't enough reason to use Smells as today's theme, his politics stank. He started a fascist paramilitary group, Solidarité Française, in the thirties and called himself the French Duce.
What is the most precious, the most exciting smell awaiting you in the house when you return to it after a dozen years or so? The smell of roses, you think? No, mouldering books. The smell of rain is rich with life. Imagine a survivor of a failed civilization with only a tattered book on aromatherapy for guidance in arresting a cholera epidemic. Yet, such a book would more likely be found amid the debris than a comprehensible medical text. For the sense of smell, almost more than any other, has the power to recall memories and it is a pity that we use it so little. Beauty is an ecstasy; it is as simple as hunger. There is really nothing to be said about it. It is like the perfume of a rose: you can smell it and that is all. A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.
