I have no idea when mankind first tried to express the complex relationships of the solar system as times and dates, but it's been a long time. Over two millennia have passed since Julius Caesar came up with the Julian calendar. A half millennium ago that gave way to the more-accurate Gregorian calendar. Two centuries back time pieces were created that were accurate enough for navigation, and Seth Thomas and other clock makers put accurate clocks in every home. In the last century we've seen the atomic clock, and in recent decades we've been adding leap seconds to keep our lives in synch with the planet. We've also come up with the perverse idea that, for half of every year, by law, we'll set our clocks an hour off. In the US, that started today.
