It was on this day in 1955 that the first sea-going oil drilling rig went into service, something my Texas friends tell me actually decreased the amount of petroleum ending up on the beaches. But a whole lot of oil was poured on the water on this day in 1989 when the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound.
