It has ever been said that oil and water do not mix, but you can calm the waves by pouring oil upon the water. I'm reminded of these thoughts by two events. It was on this day in 1955 that the first sea-going oil drilling rig went into service, something my Texas friends tell me actually decreased the amount of petroleum ending up on the beaches. But a whole lot of oil was poured on the water on this day in 1989 when the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound.
