Issues Index | Next => Coinage played a surprising role on this day in history, specifically three acts of the US Congress. In 1849 they passed the Gold Coinage Act, allowing coins to be minted from the gold recently discovered in the west. Two years later the smallest silver coin was authorized, the 3-cent piece. And in 1875 they authorized a 20-cent coin, apparently not well received as it was only issued for three years. Today, I'm authorizing the release of these quotes on Coins.
