Issues Index | Next => It was on this day in 1790 that the staff of the newly-created United States Census Bureau began the first count of the US population. There were seventeen states then, and the final tally came to 3,929,214 persons. There were no computers to assist with that tabulation, but it was a much simpler task. The only data collected was the name of the head of household, the address, and the number of persons living there. Two centuries later, the census is rather more complex, and I'll use thousands of computers to distribute these quotes on Counting. While I'm on the subject, here's the QOTD census: Yesterday, the original text version was sent to 2,142 subscribers, and the HTML version went out to 9,002 readers, for a total of 11,144!
Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Anyone can count the seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in a seed. The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings. It's not the quantity, but the quality of friendships that counts. That's the difference between 'counting off' and 'counting on.' People who count their chickens before they are hatched, act very wisely, because chickens run about so absurdly that it is impossible to count them accurately. If you can count your money, you don't have a billion dollars. Would you like to see quotes like these in your mail tomorrow morning?
