Issues Index | Next => As Larkin and I were leaving Billings on Friday, we had just gotten our shoes back on after screening when we came face-to-face with a local bookseller of our acquaintance. Not local to Billings, our local bookseller at home, over 600 miles away. After a few minutes of conversation about how unlikely it was to run into him, we neared our departure gate and immediately were approached by another friend who wasn't half as surprised by the coincidence of seeing us as we were to be seeing the second close acquaintance so far from home. I have no idea what the odds against these two meetings were, but I knew immediately that Coincidence would just happen be a theme for the quotes pretty soon.
Learn to get in touch with silence within yourself, and know that everything in this life has purpose. There are no mistakes, no coincidences, all events are blessings given to us to learn from. Coincidences are spiritual puns. The myth is the public domain and the dream is the private myth. If your private myth, your dream, happens to coincide with that of the society, you are in good accord with your group. If it isn't, you've got a long adventure in the dark forest ahead of you. Coincidence is a pimp and a cardsharper in ordinary fiction but a marvelous artist in the patterns of facts recollected by a non-ordinary memorist. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action. It's no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an airport' appear.
