Your Quotes for 7 February 2006 - Farming

John Deere was born at Rutland, Vermont on this day in 1804. In 1821 he became an apprentice blacksmith and opened his own shop four years later. In 1836, married with four children, his business was failing so the family moved west to Grand Detour, Illinois where he soon developed a plow that was dramatically more productive than others. A hardened steel plowshare cut the turf better, and a highly polished wrought-iron moldboard turned the soil aside without clogging. Ten years later, he sold his interest to his partner and started Deere and Company at Moline, making not only plows but other bright green farming equipment.
