The calendar has a couple of illuminating events today. It was on this day in 1879 that Thomas Edison first demonstrated the electric light. It caught on quickly, on this day in 1880, New York City's Broadway was lit with electric light, becoming "The Great White Way". Of course, though the days are dark at this time of year, we are surrounded by the lights of Christmas, and the eight candles of the Hanukkah menorah will soon be lit to commemorate the light that wouldn't die.
