Your Quotes for 19 December 2005 - Electricity

Looking back over the QOTD issues of the last five years, it appears that I've missed at least one issue in mid-December each year due to power outages. Electricity is an important factor in my life, a truth driven home yesterday noon when the lights went out and the battery systems that power the computers, at least briefly, started beeping like mad. Larkin grabbed a shower while there was still hot water in the tank, I started shutting all the systems down, and we left the building. Eight hours later I spent another hour bringing them back up. It was a helpless feeling, I hate to think what it would be like if it lasted a week instead of part of a day.

Science and religion no more contradict each other than light and electricity.
     - William Hiram Foulkes

When Thomas Edison worked late into the night on the electric light, he had to do it by gas lamp or candle. I'm sure it made the work seem that much more urgent.
     - George Carlin

     - Marshall McLuhan, Understanding Media, 1964

Prudence and justice tell me that in electricity and steam there is more love for man than in chastity and abstinence from meat.
     - Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, 1860 - 1904

If Thomas Edison invented electric light today, Dan Rather would report it on CBS News as "candle making industry threatened".
     - Newt Gingrich
