Issues Index | Next => Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey was born at Adams Center, New York on this day in 1851. He wanted to change the world, or at least organize it. As a librarian at Amherst College he invented the Dewey Decimal System, which was such a good idea that it was in use in 96% of American libraries by the time of his death in 1931. On the other hand, he wanted to reorganize (and grossly simplify) the spelling of the English language. He shortened his first name to Melvil, deleted both middle names, and for a time spelled his surname "Dui." My attempts at organization are like that as well: some are effective and while most come to naught.
Routine is not organization, any more than paralysis is order. What is laid down, ordered, factual is never enough to embrace the whole truth: life always spills over the rim of every cup. Our memories are card indexes consulted and then returned in disorder by authorities whom we do not control. Politics is the conspiracy of the unproductive but organized against the productive but unorganized. Sailors, with their built-in sense of order and discipline, should really be running the world. We adore chaos because we love to produce order. Would you like to see quotes like these in your mail tomorrow morning?
