Expecting to follow in his fathers footsteps as an engineer, he went to the University of Edinburgh, but poor health caused him to switch to law. He was admitted to the bar as an advocate at age 25, but had already decided to become a writer. Somewhere he changed the Lewis to Louis, so whichever pronunciation you hear for his second name, it was correct for part of his life. I read a lot of Stevenson when I was young and remember it fondly, his stories of travel and adventure were gems.
