A Seattle architect, contemplating a project, hoped I'd have something of interest. I suspect that I'm coming up short. If you have any favorite quotes that touch on this sad topic, by all means send them to me. I'll add them to the database and pass them along to the architect.
Poverty is a way of living and thinking, and not just a lack of money or things. A home is not a mere transient shelter: its essence lies in the personalities of the people who live in it. I read somewhere that 77% of all the mentally ill live in poverty. Actually, I'm more intrigued by the 23% who are apparently doing quite well for themselves. This is the true nature of home - it is the place of Peace; the shelter, not only from injury, but from all terror, doubt, and division. We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty. Poverty, to be picturesque, should be rural. Suburban misery is as hideous as it is pitiable.
