Issues Index | Next => John Loudon McAdam was born at Ayr, Scotland on this day in 1756. After making his fortune in the US he returned to Scotland where he became responsible for the roads near his estate. His studies into the problems of road maintenance led to changes in construction that are the basis for most surface roads to this date, including building them above the surrounding ground, a convex surface to speed drainage, and using layers of rock from largest to smallest. Tar or asphalt wasn't added to the formula until well after his death, but the term "tarmac" for "tar macadam" is still in use. Here are some quotes on paving and Roads.
We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run over. What keeps you going isn't some fine destination but just the road you're on, and the fact that you know how to drive. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. The lame man who keeps the right road outstrips the runner who takes a wrong one. Nay, it is obvious that the more active and swift the latter is the further he will go astray. The end is nothing; the road is all. God made the world round so we would never be able to see too far down the road. Would you like to see quotes like these in your mail tomorrow morning?
