Issues Index | Next => Michael E. DeBakey was born on this day in 1908 at Lake Charles, Louisiana. In 1932 he developed the pump that made the heart-lung machine possible, and has been a pioneer in heart surgery and implant technology ever since. Dr DeBakey performed over 60,000 surgeries, a third of which he estimates involved touching someone's heart in a way the rest of us never can.
