Your Quotes for 28 August 2005 - Goethe

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born at Frankfurt am Main, Germany on this day in 1749. By the time he was sent to Leipzig to study law at age 15 he spoke six languages. As a poet, novelist, and dramatist he practically defined German intellectual activity for much of his adult life, he also was a scientist and pursued geology, botany, anatomy, physics, and the history of science. He has been quoted so often that I found I was able to delete quite a few of the quotes in my collection where three or four different English version were obviously translations of the same German original.

A clever man commits no minor blunders.

A person can stand almost anything except a succession of ordinary days.

For a man to achieve all that is demanded of him he must regard himself as greater than he is.

If God had wanted me otherwise, He would have created me otherwise.

My poor head is in such a whirl, my mind is all in bits.

Nothing is more damaging to a new truth than an old error.
