Your Quotes for 20 August 2005 - Radio

Radio station 8MK, later known as WWJ, began daily broadcasting at Detroit on this day in 1920, the first commercial radio station in the US. It's changed a bit over the years, but I'm still listening. I grew up listening to Top Forty on CKLG (Crazy Kids Love Garbage per my father) and now, as Dave Barry points out, I'm listening to the old music and they do call it "classic rock" radio.

By the eighties, a lot of radio stations, realizing the size of the market out there, had started playing sixties music again. They called it "classic rock," because they knew we'd be upset if they came right out and called it what it is, namely "middle-aged-person nostalgia music."
