Issues Index | Next => Shmuel Gelbfisz was born at Warsaw, Poland on this day in 1882. While living with relatives in England he adopted a less imposing name, Samuel Goldfish. He move to the US in 1899 and was a very successful glove salesman, but he ended up making movies - over seventy of them. Five years after his first picture he adopted the name we recognize: Samuel Goldwyn. Between his high energy and English being his second language, he said some wonderfully absurd things.
