During World War I she volunteered as a nurse, then enrolled in pre-med at Columbia University in 1919. Visiting her parents in California the next year she attended an air fair at Long Beach which included a ten-minute flight that changed her plans. She soon was setting records for the highest, fastest, longest, and first flights by an aviatrix. She was the first woman to fly as a passenger across the Atlantic in 1929, then in 1932 became the first woman (and second person) to fly alone across that ocean. With no restroom on the plane, she didn't drink coffee or tea before the flight, staying awake with smelling salts. On 21 May 1937 she took off from Los Angeles with navigator Fred Noonan for a flight around the globe, but disappeared after flying at least 22,000 miles over both Americas, Africa, Australia, and a fair bit of the Pacific. Sh was an inspiration to millions at the time, and four decades after her Disappearance my daughter was named Amelia in her honor.
They say in India that a man who is liberated in this world has to cultivate a few mild bad habits in order to stay in the body, because if he were absolutely perfect he would disappear from manifestation. When the Earth is sick, the animals will begin to disappear. When that happens, the Warriors of the Rainbow will come to save them. We lay aside letters never to read them again, and at last we destroy them out of discretion, and so disappears the most beautiful, the most immediate breath of life, irrecoverable for ourselves and for others. When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries of life disappear and life stands explained. When I sew, the entire world disappears for a while. There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. Would you like to see quotes like these in your mail tomorrow morning?
