Much as I've tried to repress certain memories of those years, it was delightful to spend time with those I shared them with, and who aren't about to let me forget our shared embarrassments. But there were good times as well, and we relived a lot of them, sharing stories and passing around old photographs.
If I have done any deed worthy of remembrance, that deed will be my monument. If not, no monument can preserve my memory. 'I have done that,' says my memory. 'I cannot have done that' - says my pride, and remains adamant. At last memory yields. There is no man, however wise, who has not at some period of his youth said things, or lived in a way the consciousness of which is so unpleasant to him in later life that he would gladly, if he could, expunge it from his memory. The best memory is that which forgets nothing but injuries. Write kindness in marble and write injuries in the dust. Memory is a child walking along a seashore. You never can tell what small pebble it will pick up and store away among its treasured things. I want to live fast, love hard, die young, and leave a beautiful memory.
