The fundamental defect of fathers is that they want their children to be a credit to them. My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters. It's clear that most children suffer too much mother and too little father. A king, realizing his incompetence, can either delegate or abdicate his duties. A father can do neither. If only sons could see the paradox, they would understand the dilemma. Life was a lot simpler when what we honored was father and mother rather than all major credit cards.
