Issues Index | Next => The design of a flag for the inchoate United States was decided on this day in 1777, and today is celebrated as Flag Day in this country. That was the original, with a circle of 13 white stars that Betsy Ross may (or may not, her contribution is far more legend than history) have sewn on a field of blue. I have mixed feelings about the flag. It's a great symbol for a great country, but it may have been the refuge of patriotic scoundrels almost as often as it has been an inspiration.
