Issues Index | Next => It was five years ago today that a few thousand readers were surprised to get an issue of Quotes of the Day from me. I had acquired the list from a quotation e-zine that had ceased publishing, went from one random quote to a set based on a theme and added the introduction. (Some have said that the introduction wasn't an addition, others love it.) I had been collecting quotes for years and finally had the ultimate outlet for them. Fighting the tendency that Bierce rails against, I've attempted to get the quotes accurately. I love to drop quotations into conversation for the same reason Dietrich mentions. And with respect to Mr Churchill, I suspect I'm less uneducated today than I was five years ago. Think how much more educated we'll all be five years from today!
Quoting (n): the act of repeating erroneously the words of another. The wisdom of the wise and the experience of the ages are perpetuated by quotations. A fine quotation is a diamond in the hand of a man of wit and a pebble in the hand of a fool. I quote others only the better to express myself. It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations. I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.
