She quit school after the eighth grade to join a theatre troupe, sometimes danced in chorus lines in New York City. In 1913 she married an older actor, William DeWolfe Hopper, they moved to Hollywood before the divorce. Elda, now appearing as Hedda Hopper, played a number of "best friend" and "other woman" roles, but was always not quite in the chips until 1931 when she started a radio show covering the offscreen lives of Hollywood. Starting in 1938 she covered the same material in a column for the Los Angeles Times. Gossip is when you hear something you like about someone you don't. A rumor without a leg to stand on will get around some other way. Whoever gossips to you will gossip about you. Gossip is the art of saying nothing in a way that leaves practically nothing unsaid. Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip. Nobody's interested in sweetness and light.
