Issues Index | Next => Minutes become hours, hours become days, and the days become weeks - and we long for Friday. The weeks become months and seasons, the circle completes to form years, and once in every year we note that the odometer of life has kicked over another digit. I mention this now because this is my day in the cycle, I came onto this mortal coil at Ithaca, New York on this day in 1953, and I have to say it's been a trip worth making. On the other hand, I can't say I've changed the world; to steal a line from Tom Lehrer, when Mozart was my age he'd been dead for seventeen years!
These are the soul's changes. I don't believe in ageing. I believe in forever altering one's aspect to the sun. Hence my optimism. The really frightening thing about middle age is the knowledge that you'll grow out of it. In youth we learn; in age we understand. There are a lot of men who are healthier at age fifty then they have ever been before, because a lot of their fear is gone. No man was ever so completely skilled in the conduct of life, as not to receive new information from age and experience. Old age ain't no place for sissies.
