Quotes of the Day for 18 May 2005 - Mountains

It was a quarter century ago today that the mountain shook, rumbled, and blew her lid. Mount Saint Helens erupted with a force estimated to equal 25 million tons of TNT, moving some 23 cubic miles of her peak elsewhere. An ash cloud reached 80,000 feet, a lateral blast of ash and gasses travelling at 300 miles per hour stripped the bark from century-old trees - and then snapped them off like toothpicks. At sunrise the mountain stood 9,677 feet tall, when the dust settled to resurvey she was only 8,363 feet in elevation. Events like that give you a really good idea of just how powerful humans are. With deference to her violent past and in her honor, today's theme is Mountains.

Change is the watchword of progression. When we tire of well-worn ways, we seek for new. This restless craving in the souls of men spurs them to climb, and to seek the mountain view.
     - Ella Wheeler Wilcox, 1850 - 1919

Energy, like the biblical grain of the mustard-seed, will remove mountains.
     - Hosea Ballou, 1771 - 1852

You never conquer a mountain. Mountains can't be conquered; you conquer yourself - your hopes, your fears.
     - Jim Whitaker

Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life.
     - John Muir, 1838 - 1914

A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand. Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain?
     - Kahlil Gibran, 1883 - 1931

Every now and again take a good look at something not made with hands, a mountain, a star, the turn of a stream. There will come to you wisdom and patience and solace and, above all, the assurance that you are not alone in the world.
     - Sidney Lovett
