Issues Index | Next => Two notable challenges were completed on this day in history. On this day in 1869 Leland Stanford swung a silver hammer to drive a gold spike to complete the first transcontinental railway. On this day in 1960, USS Triton (SSRN-586), a nuclear-powered submarine, surfaced after an 84-day 36,000 mile circumnavigation of the globe following the route of Magellan - who stayed on the surface, traveled more slowly, and was killed before the trip was over. From one who has trouble actually finishing anything, here's a salute to Completion.
The recognition that no knowledge can be complete, no metaphor entire, is itself humanizing. It counteracts fanaticism. It grants even to adversaries the possibility of partial truth, and to oneself the possibility of error. In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us. Whatever is in any way beautiful hath its source of beauty in itself, and is complete in itself; praise forms no part of it. So it is none the worse nor the better for being praised. When our eyes see our hands doing the work of our hearts, the circle of Creation is completed inside us, the doors of our souls fly open and love steps forth to heal everything in sight. Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing true or beautiful makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore, we are saved by love.
