<= Previous | April Issues Index | Next => John James Audubon was born on his father's plantation in Haiti on this day in 1780. Despite being born of his father's mistress, he was raised in France by his father's wife and educated with other young aristocrats. He took an early interest in drawing birds, when he later found himself without an income he proceeded to paint some of the finest images of North America's birds. The modern Audubon Society approves of his art but would hardly approve of his methods: He got the birds to pose for him by first shooting them.
It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds. Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best. A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I don't ask for the meaning of the song of a bird or the rising of the sun on a misty morning. There they are, and they are beautiful.
